Good news, for a change. If you’re like me, except nuts, you have probably been wondering, “With so much violence in the world, and so little in the way of affordable drugs, is there any way I, as a moonbat, can personally make a meaningful apology to Saddam Hussein for causing so much hardship to his armies of evil henchmen? Well, not a personal apology, since I didn’t do any of that army stuff. But isn’t there some way to, like, do a, kind of, apology for other people? Like, ‘I’m sorry someone else liberated your country, dude’?”

Washington Missouri

The answer, my groovy friend, is yes. The folks at forusa.org have assembled an array of snapshots of photogenic narcissists just like you, culled from all across the country, all of whom are convinced that they liberated Iraq, and are dreadfully sorry for the whole affair.

(Note: all images on this post were modified by the author. The original images are at forusa.org.)

Soon they will be forwarding these heartfelt messages of commiseration to Saddam Hussein himself, but time is running out! As their website says, “Last Call for IRAQ Photo Project Join 2,000 people who have already told Iraqis how they feel! Final deadline for submissions: October 12.” Oops. We missed it, huh?

Not to worry, though. Tell ya what. Send your apology to Saddam to me instead. Take a photo of yourself with your like-minded co-apologists, and e-mail it to seangleeson@gmail.com . I’ll post all entries to this blog, so Saddam, who I’m told is a frequent visitor, will know that at least you care. (I may even retouch the photos for clarity.) I am posting the submitted apologies to my Page of Atonement.

A tip of the hat to LGF. A courteous nod to Power Line.

UPDATE: And a hearty bow of obeisance to Kevin at Wizbang, who linked to this noble gesture for peace and Baathist tyranny, right on his blog and everything. He also posted his own Photoshopic translation of one of the heartfelt apologies, which brought a tear to my eye.

I also see Tim Blair is plowing this fertile field.

ANOTHER UPDATE: A gracious welcome to readers of Opinion Journal’s “Best of the Web Today.” If you like this post, you may enjoy this one. And this one is a gem. Stay as long as you want. And tell your friends.

FINAL UPDATE: All kidding aside, please see “All kidding aside.”

See, three smart-aleck entries in one day. He was all geared up to work today but Fedex didn’t make it. Look at how his energies got focused instead.

Whereas *I* cleaned up the living room and started to knit a scarf. Not to mention kept 4 count them 4 children alive and well and reasonably happy.

“I am SORRY we waited 12 years to act in our RUSH TO WAR. We could have saved millions of Iraqis 11 years of pain and suffering!”

“I am SORRY moonbats gather around Lady Libery’s light… they are herded into Gulags in North Korea!”

Cute, but I was told of an even more clever stunt pulled at the gates of Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, many years back.

This was a favorite site for anti-nuclear protestors during the height of the Cold War, since Sandia National Laboratories is located on the base, along with (reputedly) a sizeable arsenal of nukes.

At the height of one of the protests, so the story goes, a V.W. pulled up across the street from the protestors. A mime stepped out and began marching around with his own protest sign.

Naturally, the sign was completely blank.

It would be hard to come up with a more eloquent commentary on the vapidness of the protest culture.

  53. Comment by Heather M — Wed 27 Oct 2004 @ 3:38 pm

I am sorry that Justin Eagle was so rude to you. It was clearly inappropriate and unproductive for him to go off like that. We all make mistakes sometimes, especially when we are angry. I understand why he was angry. The history of Iraq is a troubled one, and the U.S. has played a very big role in making it so. We have made some big mistakes and we have much to apologize for. Just a couple of examples. For ten years after the Gulf war the U.S. imposed and enforced sanctions on Iraq which prevented the country from getting food, medicine and clean water. As a result of these sanctions half a million children under the age of five died. This is a fact reported by UNICEF. Almost every family in Iraq has watched a child die, with no hope of treatment or help and they know that the U.S. is responsible. Personally, I want to apologize for that. Then there is Abu Ghraib. I’m sure we can agree that was wrong. When civilized people do something wrong, they apologize. I don’t think that half a million dead children or people being tortured and humiliated is a joke. I don’t think that people expressing grief or remorse for allowing these things to occur is a joke, either. If the world hates the U.S. it might be because we have a very easy life here and it looks to many people like we think their suffering is a joke.

  54. Comment by Gleeson — Wed 27 Oct 2004 @ 6:21 pm

Heather, I agree that the United States has made errors vis-a-vis Iraq. You correctly observe that the sanctions were ineffectual. President Bush and I agree with you. That’s why he lifted the sanctions.

But these Forusa people were not apologizing for the sanctions. Their signs did not read, “We’re sorry we imposed sanctions for twelve years instead of liberating your country.” They were instead apologizing for the first good thing we’ve ever done for Iraq.

  56. Comment by Heather M — Fri 29 Oct 2004 @ 9:30 am

Actually Sean, if you read the signs people are holding most of them apologize for the suffering of the Iraqi people caused by the U.S. and many apologize for torture, refering to Abe Ghraib. Some do indeed apologize for the war. If you go to the FOR USA website you will see that this is a faith-based group who opposes war and violence in all it’s forms and works to promote nonviolent means for resolving conflict. If you are not familiar with nonviolent conflict resolution it might sound strange and unrealistic, but history has shown that this is the only way to resolve conflict that does not lead to more violence and death.
I also think that it is important for us to remember that the U.S. did not begin this war to free the people of Iraq from a dictator. We were told that there were weapons of mass detruction in Iraq that posed an imminant threat to the U.S. Colin Powell testified to the U.N. on this. But suddenly when no weapons that posed a threat were found everyone started saying that we were trying to free the people. It might be OK if this were true but, the people of Iraq still live in fear everyday. How exactly have we helped them?

  57. Comment by Gleeson — Fri 29 Oct 2004 @ 1:44 pm

We have helped them by deposing Saddam Hussein, and allowing them to rule their own country. We continue to help them, at considerable cost in lives and treasure, by fighting the Baathist terrorists, who keep blowing them up. That’s why the prime minister of Iraq came all the way here, just to thank us.

I agree with you, that “the U.S. did not begin this war to free the people of Iraq from a dictator.” The U.S. did not begin this war, period. We’re in this war whether we fight back or not (and only one candidate wants to fight back). In the course of fighting for our own lives, we happen to have done a good turn for the Iraqis. Yeah, they still live in fear, but not of us; we’re the guys killing the guys they fear. Their greatest fear is that John Kerry might win the presidency, and abandon them to their butchers.
