A bit late to ride the crest of the apology craze that’s sweeping moonbat America, former peanut farmer Jimmy Carter emerged from his retirement, as he does every Monday, to denounce the illegal warmongering of President George W.

Only this time, it was Washington. In a Hardball interview, Carter said that what the American Revolution has in common with Iraq’s liberation is, they were both evil, unnecessary, illegal wars.

CARTER: Well, one parallel [with the liberation of Iraq] is that the Revolutionary War, more than any other war up until recently, has been the most bloody war weve fought.I think another parallel is that in some ways the Revolutionary War could have been avoided. It was an unnecessary war… [W]e would have been a free country now, as is Canada and India and Australia, having gotten our independence in a nonviolent way.

I note that three times during the interview, host Chris Matthews calls Carter an “historian.” As in, “Do you think as an historian you would…?” And, “as an historian, Mr. President, not just as a former president…?” Since when is Jimmy Carter an historian? But okay. If Dan Rather can be a document expert, then I guess Jimmy Carter can be an historian.

But what kind of historian is he? Well, he’s the kind who can say, “the Revolutionary War, more than any other war up until recently, has been the most bloody war weve fought.” Oops. Forgot the Civil War, did we? Or was that war fought “recently”?

REVOLUTION (1775-83)     CIVIL WAR (18611865)
American dead:
4,435
    Union dead:
140,414
British dead:
2,000
    Confederate dead:
74,524
Total dead:
6,435
    Total dead:
214,938

And he’s the kind who can say, “we would have been a free country now, as is [sic] Canada and India and Australia, having gotten our independence in a nonviolent way.” So, if Washington and those other hotheaded Yankee cowboys would have just shown a little of Saint Jimmy’s restraint and sensitivity, the American colonies might eventually have been granted independence along with India! Therefore, the 1776 war was unnecessary.

India was given her independence in 1947. Patience, patience.

(Thanks, as ever, to Charles.)

UPDATE: Over on RedState.org, this post led to a lively ongoing discussion, in which a fellow named “Crank” pointed out an error I had made. I had misinterpreted Carter’s remarks. Interpreted correctly, they are even more odious than I had assumed. See that discussion to know what I mean.
