In his speech today, President Bush said, “The reason to honor Martin Luther King is to remember his strength of character and his leadership, but also to remember the remaining work.” Amen.
Commenting in National Review, Roger Clegg suggests a very good place to start that remaining work: repeal some of the 656 state laws on the books that discriminate on the basis of race. Racist laws are unjust, unconscionable, and — more to the point — illegal. Clegg says, “Judging people by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin is not a principle that ought to have 656 exceptions to it.” Amen.
