This poor, poor man is Tony Alleyne, an interior designer and Star Trek devotee in England. He, um, likes Star Trek.
A few years ago, he remodeled his apartment into what he called “an exact replica” of a Federation starship. (The BBC says it’s the Enterprise, but IOL says it’s the Voyager.) It cost him 12 thousand pounds of money (they weigh their money in pounds over there), or about $21,000. Also, his wife. She left when he replaced the refrigerator with a “warp coil.”

Since that time, he has run up another 100 thousand pounds of debt — about $175,000, more than eight times the cost of the remodeling — trying to promote his starship remodeling services to fellow fans of the series.
“I was convinced Trekkies all over the world would want a house like mine and pay me to do it,” he said, adding the obvious codacil, “But I was wrong.”
